Topological insulator with time-reversal symmetry

چکیده

It is impossible to have quantum Hall effect without breaking the time-reversal symmetry. xy  xy. If we want xy to be invariant under , xy  xy, xy must be zero. Q: Can we have other type of topological insulators, in the presence of -symmetry? By saying topological insulator, I mean an insulator with a protected metallic edge. By protected, I mean no matter what we do, we cannot turn the metallic edge into an insulating edge.

Photonic topological insulator with broken time-reversal symmetry.

A topological insulator is a material with an insulating interior but time-reversal symmetry-protected conducting edge states. Since its prediction and discovery almost a decade ago, such a symmetry-protected topological phase has been explored beyond electronic systems in the realm of photonics. Electrons are spin-1/2 particles, whereas photons are spin-1 particles. The distinct spin differenc...

Andreev reflection in two-dimensional topological insulators with either conserved or broken time-reversal symmetry

We investigate Andreev reflection in two-dimensional heterojunctions formed by a superconductor in contact with a topological insulator ribbon either possessing or breaking time-reversal symmetry. Both classes of topological insulators exhibit perfect Andreev reflection, which is robust against disorder. This is assigned to topologically protected edge states. In the time-reversal symmetric cas...

A key difference between quantum Hall phases induced by a magnetic field and topological insulator phases induced by spin-orbit coupling is that the latter depend crucially on a symmetry, time reversal. The action of time-reversal symmetry on electrons leads to a new kind of topological invariant in twodimensional systems [1] that takes only two possible values: if this “Z2 invariant” is even, ...

Fractional S-duality, Classification of Fractional Topological Insulators and Surface Topological Order

In this paper, we propose a generalization of the S-duality of four-dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED 4 ) to QED 4 with fractionally charged excitations, the fractional S-duality. Such QED 4 can be obtained by gauging the U(1) symmetry of a topologically ordered state with fractional charges. When time-reversal symmetry is imposed, the axion angle (θ) can take a nontrivial but still time...

The time reversal invariant fractional Josephson effect

One of the most basic consequences of topological superconductivity is the fractional Josephson effect, which arises due to the coherent tunneling of single electrons between two superconductors, leading to an ac Josephson effect with half the usual Josephson frequency. In this paper we will review the theoretical and experimental foundations of topological superconductivity and the fractional ...
